One of the most popular side trips is a visit to the unique quartz cliffs of Shining Rock. Shining Rock Gap is a great place to take a break or set up camp and explore without the weight of a full pack. Camping nearby allows the option to view incredible sunrises, sunsets and the night sky from the milky white boulders.
This is an unnamed but well used trail with several turns, intersections and social trails branching off as it climbs to the top of Shining Rock. The trail roughly parallels the Old Butt Knob trail and meets with it at a signed intersection. It can be easy to get disoriented in this area, especially in poor weather conditions or at night.
From the intersection at Shining Rock Gap, turn LEFT heading towards the Old Butt Knob trail.
Shortly the trails splits and a more faint trail goes right. Stay LEFT on the more prominent trail. You’ll soon be below the large rock face and begin heading uphill beside it. It’s a relatively short .4mi but strenuous climb to the top of the large quartz formation from here.
There are several side trails as you make your way up alongside the large cliff. Look for an opening to a small chute to scramble up to an exceptional West facing view.
Return to the main trail and continue uphill. You’ll pass the signed intersection of the Old Butt trail and a campsite in the next opening. Not far beyond that you’ll see a short side trail to a fairly flat rocky outcropping to your right offering a great East facing view for watching the sun rise.
Continue following the main trail through the tight tunnel of foliage as it flattens out near the top. You’ll arrive at several large boulders situated to give you an elevated perch to take in the view in every direction.
